The Western Carolina Catamounts and the East Tennessee State Buccaneers meet in SoCon college basketball action from the Freedom Hall Civic Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Western Carolina Catamounts will try to hold their spot in the SoCon standings, sitting at 10-7 in conference play after a 109-78 beatdown of Samford last time out. Mason Faulkner leads Western Carolina in scoring and assists with 17.5 PPG and 6.2 APG while Carolos Dotson is 2nd in scoring and tops in rebounding with 15.5 PPG and 10 RPG this season. Onno Steger has 12.8 PPG and 4.8 RPG and Matt Halvorsen also has 10.1 PPG for the Catamounts this season. As a team, Western Carolina is averaging 79.7 points on 46.6% shooting from the field, 37.2% from 3-point range and 71.6% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 74.9 points on 43.3% shooting from the field and 30.7% from behind the arc this season. Western Carolina is 8-6 straight up and 8-5-1 against the spread on the road this season.
The East Tennessee State Buccaneers will try to finish the season alone atop the SoCon mountain, sitting at 15-2 in conference play after an 8th straight win in the form of a 60-54 triumph over Wofford last time out. Tray Boyd III leads ETSU in scoring with 13.7 PPG while Bo Hodges is 2nd in scoring with 13.2 PPG as well as logging 5.8 RPG. Daivien Williamson has 10.3 PPG and Jeromy Rodriguez has 10.1 PPG for the Buccaneers this season with Rodriguez adding 7.4 RPG in 16 games this season. Lucas N’Guessan has 9.2 PPG and 6.1 RPG and Isaiah Tisdale has 8.7 PPG and a team-high 2.9 APG this season. As a team, East Tennessee State is averaging 76.2 points on 47.3% shooting from the field, 34.2% from 3-point range and 68.6% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 63 points on 42.4% shooting from the field and 30% from 3-point range this season. East Tennessee State is 15-1 straight up and 7-6 against the spread at home this season.
Head-to-head, the road team is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
I considered Western Carolina and the points here, but the problem is that the Buccaneers have a lot to play for too with top spot and the SoCon regular season title hanging in the balance. That could be a recipe for Western Carolina to sneak in and cover as ETSU may just play not to lose, but I think the Buccaneers show up for this one in a big way so I’ll lay the points with East Tennessee State here.
