The Wyoming Cowboys and the Fresno State Bulldogs meet in Mountain West conference college basketball action from the Save Mart Center on Saturday night.
The Wyoming Cowboys will try to get out of the Mountain West basement, sitting at 2-15 in conference play after a 73-68 loss to Nevada last time out. Hunter Maldonado leads Wyoming with an average of 16.7 PPG, 5.7 RPG and 4 APG while Jake Hendricks has 10 PPG this season. Hunter Thompson is averaging 7.8 PPG and 4.4 RPG for the Cowboys this year. As a team, Wyoming is averaging 61.3 points on 41% shooting from the field, 30.6% from 3-point range and 72.5% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 69.3 points on 43.4% shooting from the field and 32.4% from 3-point range this season. Wyoming is 3-7 straight up and 8-2 against the spread on the road this season.
The Fresno State Bulldogs will try to break away from New Mexico in the Mountain West table, sitting at 6-11 in conference play after a 78-76 loss to Nevada last time out. Orlando Robinson leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 12.8 PPG while New Williams has 11.6 PPG and Nate Grimes is right behind with 11.5 PPG and a team-high 10 RPG this season. As a team, Fresno State is averaging 69.4 points on 41.9% shooting from the field, 33.5% from 3-point range and 70% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 69.1 points on 41.6% shooting from the field and 35.8% from 3-point range this season. Head-to-head, the road team is 4-0-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and the underdog is 3-1-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
This game features two of the teams that I’ve been the lowest on all year long, and it’s not a game I’m trying to bet. However, this is just another example (and maybe the final example of the regular season) of all of this unwarranted love for Fresno State. When are people going to realize (and it’s the end of the season so it’s probably too late), that this Fresno State team is not a good basketball team? Wyoming’s been terrible all season long, but the Cowboys are at least covering the number on the road way more often than not and they’ve done a good job covering in their last 10 games. I just don’t think the Bulldogs should be double-digit favorites against anybody after the year they’ve been having, so I’ll take my chances with Wyoming and the points in this one.
