The Valparaiso Crusaders and the Indiana State Sycamores meet in MVC college hoops from the Hulman Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Valparaiso Crusaders will try to crack the top half of the MVC, sitting at 9-8 in conference play after an 89-74 win over Missouri State last time out. Javon Freeman-Liberty leads Valpo in scoring and rebounding with 19.3 PPG and 6 RPG while Ryan Fazekas has 11.4 PPG in 13 games and Daniel Sackey has a team-high 3.6 APG this season. As a team, Valparaiso is averaging 72.8 points on 44.3% shooting from the field, 34.2% from 3-point range and 71.2% from the foul line while allowing 71.1 points on 45.4% shooting from the field and 35.8% from 3-point range this season. Valparaiso is 4-9 straight up and 6-6-1 against the spread on the road this season.
The Indiana State Sycamores will attempt to slide into the top-3 in the MVC, sitting at 10-7 in conference play after a 3rd straight win in the form of a 77-68 win over Southern Illinois last time out. Tyreke Key leads the Sycamores in scoring with 16.1 PPG while Jordan Barnes is 2nd in scoring and tops in assists with 12.7 PPG and 3.8 APG this season. Jake Laravia also has 9.4 PPG and a team-high 5.9 RPG this season. As a team, Indiana State is averaging 68.9 points on 45.5% shooting from the field, 38.4% from 3-point range and 71.7% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 66.7 points on 44.7% shooting from the field and 31.8% from 3-point range this season. Indiana State is 11-1 straight up and 7-4 against the spread at home this season.
Head-to-head, the home team is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
I considered the points with Valparaiso coming into this one, but news came out that Javon Freeman-Liberty will miss the foreseeable future as he’s recovering from an untimely case of mononucleosis. With that said, Freeman-Liberty makes up a huge part of the Crusaders offense, and I just think that that alone takes a blow on Valparaiso. Indiana State by far plays their best basketball at home and I just think the Sycamores take advantage of a depleted Valpo team here en route to a win and cover.
