The Michigan State Spartans and the Maryland Terrapins meet in Big 12 conference college hoops action from the Xfinity Center on Saturday night.
The Michigan State Spartans will try to break free from a four-team logjam at the top of the Big Ten standings, sitting at 11-6 in conference play after a 78-70 win over Iowa last time out. Cassius Winston leads the Spartans in scoring and assists with 18.4 PPG and 5.8 APG while Xavier Tillman Sr. is 2nd in scoring and tops in rebounding by averaging 13.3 PPG and 10.1 RPG this season. As a team, Michigan State is averaging 75.6 points on 45.7% shooting from the field, 34.9% from 3-point range and 74.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 64.3 points on 37.6% shooting from the field and 28.4% from 3-point range this season. Michigan State is 5-4 straight up and 2-7 against the spread on the road this season.
The Maryland Terrapins will look to get one step closer to clinching the Big Ten regular season crown, sitting at the top of the table with a 13-4 conference record, including a 74-73 win over Minnesota in their last outing. Anthony Cowan Jr. leads Maryland in scoring and assists with 16.2 PPG and 4.8 APG while Jalen Smith is 2nd in scoring and tops in rebounding, averaging a double-double per game with 15.2 PPG and 10.5 RPG this season. Aaron Wiggins is also averaging 10.7 PPG this season. As a team, Maryland is averaging 71.8 points on 41.6% shooting from the field, 31.5% from 3-point range and 75% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 63.3 points on 39.1% shooting from the field and 31.9% from 3-point range this season. Maryland is 15-0 straight up and 8-7 against the spread at home this season.
Head-to-head, the underdog is 9-4-1 ATS in the last 14 meetings between these two teams.
Michigan State is experienced and still has a lot of talent on that roster so I wouldn’t be surprised if Sparty hung around and competed here. However, Maryland has been looking more and more like the team to beat in the Big Ten this season, and while Michigan State is still one of the better teams in the conference, like many this season, the Spartans’ play hasn’t carried over to the road as MSU is just 2-7 ATS away from home this season. I expect the Spartans to battle but for Maryland to pull away late, covering the spread in what I see being a 4-6 point Maryland victory.
