The Idaho Vandals and the Southern Utah Thunderbirds meet in college basketball action from Centrum Arena Utah on Saturday.
Idaho enters this one at 7-21 overall. It’s been a four-game losing streak for Idaho in their last quartet, with defeats by Portland State, Northern Arizona, Sacramento State and Northern Colorado.
In the loss to Northern Colorado, Idaho’s leading scorer was Trevon Allen with 14 points and six rebounds. Ja’Vary Christmas was also in double-digits there with 13 points, two rebounds and two assists, and Keyshaad Dixon chipped in seven points with three assists.
Over on the Southern Utah side, they’re 14-14 this year. Over the last five games Southern Utah is winless, falling to Sac State, Northern Arizona, Northern CO, Weber State and Eastern Washington.
In the loss to Eastern Washington, Southern Utah’s John Knight led the team with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. The only other Southern Utah player in double-digits there was Andre Adams with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Southern Utah is 2-10 ATS in their last 12 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last five overall. The over is 5-1 in Southern Utah’s last six Saturday games and they’re 2-8 ATS in their last 10 at home versus a team with a losing road record.
Meanwhile, Idaho is 1-4 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss and 7-21-1 ATS in their last 29 after an ATS loss. Idaho is 0-4 ATS in their last four overall and the over is 3-1-1 in their last five after a straight-up loss.
Idaho has been in a scoring slump during this four-game losing streak. In the first two games of that quartet Idaho put up a combined 130 points; in the second pair they managed to tally just 105 combined points. Idaho isn’t normally a great scoring team anyway but that’s still a low number for them.
Southern Utah has been meandering on the scoreboard themselves, going over 70 points just once in their last five games. Realistically there’s not a ton of intrigue here, but given the comfortable atmosphere I’m dealing toward Southern Utah on the cover.
