The Line: Northern Illinois Huskies -1.5 -- Over/Under: 137
The Toledo Rockets and the Northern Illinois Huskies meet in college basketball MAC-tion from the NIU Convocation Center on Tuesday night.
The Toledo Rockets will try to finish the year strong, sitting at 7-9 in conference play after a 3rd straight win in the form of a 69-63 win over Ball State last time out. Marreon Jackson leads Toledo in scoring and assists with 19.7 PPG and 5.6 APG while Luke KNapke has 16.2 PPG and 7.9 RPG this season. Willie Jackson has 11.8 PPG to match his team-high 11.8 RPG this season while Spencer Littleson is 4th in scoring with 10.6 PPG this season. As a team, Toledo is averaging 75.2 points on 44.2% shooting from the field, 36.9% from 3-point range and 74.1% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 70.4 points on 41.6% shooting from the field and 34.4% from 3-point range this season. Toledo is 7-8 straight up and 7-7-1 against the spread on the road this season.
The Northern Illinois Huskies will try to potentially clinch the MAC West, sitting at 10-6 in conference play after a 72-69 loss to Western Michigan last time out. Eugene German leads Northern Illinois in scoring and assists with 20.5 PPG and 2.7 APG while Lacey James is 2nd in scoring with 9 PPG as well as a team-high 7.8 RPG this season. As a team, Northern Illinois is averaging 67.1 points on 41.6% shooting from the field, 34.4% from 3-point range and 66.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 64.6 points on 40.3% shooting from the field and 30.4% from 3-point range this season.
Head-to-head, the road team is 10-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings between these two teams.
I’ve been riding Northern Illinois a ton this season and they’re a team to look out for once the MAC tournament rolls around. However, while Toledo has scuffled, the Rockets tend to do much, much better against the number on the road than they do at home. Northern Illinois rallying to nearly come back against WMU was thrilling to watch, but NIU has a tendency to shoot themselves in the foot and fall so far behind that it’s hard to come back from. I’m not sure that happens with Toledo, but I do think that the Rockets have a lot more scoring depth than the Huskies do, and I think the Rockets can get some revenge after NIU beat them in their own building earlier this year. I’ll take a shot with Toledo and the points in this one.
