The Mississippi State Bulldogs and the South Carolina Gamecocks meet in SEC college basketball action from the Colonial Life Arena on Tuesday night.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs will look to climb some spots near the top of the SEC standings, sitting at 10-6 in conference play after 4 wins in their last 5 games with a 67-63 win over Missouri last time out. Reggie Perry leads Mississippi State in scoring and rebounding with 17.2 PPG and 9.7 RPG while Tyson Carter is 2nd in scoring and tops in assists with 13.7 PPG and 3.1 APG this season. Nick Weatherspoon has 11.8 PPG in 19 games and Robert Woodard II has 11.4 PPG this season. As a team, Mississippi State is averaging 73.6 points on 47.1% shooting from the field, 33.8% from 3-point range and 75% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 68.4 points on 42.6% shooting from the field and 31.5% from 3-point range this season. Mississippi State is 4-6 straight up and 6-4 against the spread on the road this season.
The South Carolina Gamecocks will look to rebound and catch up to the Bulldogs, sitting at game behind at 9-7 with a 90-86 loss to Alabama, their 3rd loss in their last 4 games. A.J. Lawson leads South Carolina in scoring with 13.7 PPG while Jermaine Couisnard is 2nd with 12.2 PPG and a team-high 3 APG and Maik Kotsar has 11 PPG and 6.5 RPG this season. As a team, South Carolina is averaging 73 points on 43.9% shooting from the field, 31.3% from 3-point range and 62% from the foul line this season. South Carolina is 11-5 straight up and 7-9 against the spread at home this season.
Head-to-head, the underdog is 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
I get South Carolina being favored at home on senior night, and the fact that the line is only a bucket is tempting. However, Mississippi State has just been playing the better basketball of the two lately, winning 7 of their last 10 games, and that includes a win over these same Gamecocks just a couple of weeks ago. I just think the Bulldogs carry the stronger momentum coming into this one, so I’ll lay the bucket with Mississippi State here.
