The High Point Panthers and the USC Upstate Spartans meet in Big South tournament college basketball action from the Hodge Center on Tuesday night.
The High Point Panthers come into the conference tournament as the #10 seed, finishing the year with a 9-22 overall record, including 6-12 in Big South conference play to finish tied for 10th, missing out on last place in a tiebreaker with Campbell. John-Michael Wright leads the Panthers with an average of 14.4 PPG, 5.4 RPG and 2.3 APG while Curtis Holland III has 12.7 PPG in 15 games this season. As a team, High Point is averaging 66.2 points on 40.7% shooting from the field, 31.7% from 3-point range and 70.6% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 75.1 points on 46.3% shooting from the field and 39% from 3-point range this season.
The USC-Upstate Spartans enter the tourney as the #7 seed, sitting at 7-11 in conference play as part of their 12-19 overall mark this season, winning out on a three-way tiebreaker for 7th with Charleston Southern and Presbyterian. Everette Hammond leads the Spartans with 14.3 PPG while Tommy Bruner has 13.9 PPG. Nevin Zink has 7.1 PPG and 4.5 RPG while Dalvin White is adding 6.2 PPG and 3.7 APG this season. As a team, USC-Upstate is averaging 69.3 points on 42.5% shooting from the field, 32.3% from 3-point range and 68.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 74 points on 46.2% shooting from the field and 34.8% from 3-point range this season.
I think USC-Upstate should be favored here as the higher seed, but despite their record, High Point has been playing the better ball of the two as of late and the Panthers actually swept the Spartans in both meetings this year. I’ll take a shot with High Point and the free buckets as the Panthers could make it three for three this season.
