The Line: Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles +1.5 -- Over/Under: 144
The Rice Owls and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles meet in college basketball action from Reed Green Coliseum on Wednesday.
Rice comes in at 14-15 on the year. Over their last four games, Rice is 2-2, falling to Old Dominion and UTEP while otherwise beating Charlotte and Middle Tennessee in that time.
In the win over Middle Tennessee, Rice’s top scorers were Trey Murphy and Robert Martin, each with 21 points along with a combined three assists and 10 rebounds. Drew Peterson doubled up on 16 points, 10 assists and five rebounds in that one as well.
Over on the Southern Miss side, they’re 9-20 on the year. After winning consecutive games over Florida Atlantic and FIU, Southern Miss has lost their last pair to Middle Tennessee and UTEP.
In the loss to UTEP, Southern Miss’ lead scorer was LaDavius Draine with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Tyler Stevenson put up 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists there, and Leonard Harper-Baker doubled up on 10 rebounds, 11 points and three assists.
Southern Miss is 1-4 ATS in their last five versus a team with a losing straight-up record and the under is 4-1 in their last five home games. The over is 4-0 in Southern Miss’ last four after an ATS loss and the under is 4-1 in their last five at home versus a team with a losing road record.
Meanwhile, Rice is 2-6 ATS in their last eight after a straight-up win and 2-6 ATS in tie last eight after an ATS win. Rice is 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall and the over is 3-1-1 in their last five road games.
Rice has been doing pretty well on the scoreboard lately, and that’s helped them out in the win/loss columns as the season comes to a close. Rice has been at 70 points or above in seven of their last eight games and they’re 5-3 in that stretch.
As for Southern Miss, they had 72 or more in two of three games, but since then they’ve posted a combined 109 points across their last two games. I don’t have a ton of confidence in Southern Miss right now, so this one looks like a Rice cover to me.
