The Drake Bulldogs and the Northern Iowa Panthers meet in a Missouri Valley conference tournament quarterfinal matchup in college basketball action from the Enterprise Center on Friday afternoon.
The Drake Bulldogs punched their ticket to the quarters by virtue of a 75-65 first round win over Illinois State on Thursday. Liam Robbins leads Drake in scoring and rebounding with 13.8 PPG and 6.9 RPG while Roman Penn is 2nd in scoring and tops in assists with 11.7 PPG and 5.5 APG this season. As a team, Drake is averaging 69.1 points on 45.6% shooting from the field, 34% from 3-point range and 71% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 67.9 points on 42.6% shooting from the field and 37.3% from 3-point range this season.
The Northern Iowa Panthers come into the tournament as the top seed, finishing the year with a 14-4 mark in conference play as part of their 25-5 overall record this season. AJ Green leads Northern Iowa in scoring and assists with 19.7 PPG and 3 APG while Trae Berhow has 13 PPG and Austin Phyfe has 11.2 PPG and a team-high 8.3 RPG this season. As a team, Northern Iowa is averaging 75.8 points on 48.2% shooting from the field, 39.6% from 3-point range and 76% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 64.3 points on 41.5% shooting from the field and 33% from 3-point range this season.
I considered Drake and the points, as tournament games tend to bring a little bit more out of guys, but the problem is that Drake hasn't been a great team away from home this year, while Northern Iowa has done well against the number and has looked like the team to beat in the MVC regardless of where they play this season. I just think this is another situation where UNI flexes their muscle at the top of the MVC mountain, so I'll lay the points with Northern Iowa here.
