The USC Upstate Spartans and the Winthrop Eagles meet in a Big South conference tournament quarterfinal matchup from the Donald N. Dedmon Center on Thursday afternoon.
The USC Upstate Spartans punched their ticket to the tournament quarterfinals after picking up a 69-59 win over High Point in their last outing. Everette Hammond leads USC Upstate in scoring with 14.6 PPG as well as 4.5 RPG while Tommy Bruner has 13.8 PPG this season. Dalvin White has 6.4 PPG and a team-high 3.7 APG while Nevin Zink has 7.1 PPG and a team-high 4.7 RPG this season. As a team, USC Upstate is averaging 69.3 points on 42.5% shooting from the field, 32.3% from 3-point range and 68.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 74 points on 46.2% shooting from the field and 34.8% from 3-point range this season.
The Winthrop Eagles come into the conference tournament as the #2-seed, clinching a first round bye after finishing the regular season with a 15-3 conference record as part of their 21-10 overall mark this season, only losing out on the top-seed in the tournament after a tiebreaker loss to Radford. Hunter Hale leads Winthrop in scoring with 13.3 PPG while D.J. Burns has 12.2 PPG and Josh Ferguson has 11.3 PPG and a team-high 6.4 RPG this season. Chandler Vaudrin also has 9.3 PPG as well as 5.9 RPG and a team-high 5.9 APG this season. As a team, Winthrop is averaging 80.8 points on 45.9% shooting from the field, 34.3% from 3-point range and 63.5% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 71.8 points on 44.1% shooting from the field and 33% from 3-point range this season.
I get Winthrop being favored here as the Eagles are the better team and beat the Spartans at home by 26 points back in late January. However, Winthrop’s also failed to cover in eight straight games, including three spreads as a double-digit favorite. It’s hard for me to lay double-digits with a team that hasn’t won by more than nine points in over a month. I’ll take a shot with USC Upstate and the points here.
