The Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs and the Winthrop Eagles meet in college basketball action from Dedmon Center on Saturday.
Gardner-Webb enters this Big South Tournament matchup at 16-15 overall. After finishing off the regular season with wins over Campbell, Charleston Southern and Radford, Gardner-Webb kicked off tournament play with a 72-62 win over UNC Asheville in the first round on Thursday.
In the Thursday win over UNC-Asheville, Gardner-Webb’s Eric Jamison led the team on 19 points, doubling up on 13 rebounds as well. Jaheam Cornwall added 16 points with three rebounds for Gardner-Webb there also.
Over on the Winthrop side, they’re 22-10 on the year. Since last losing to Hampton, Winthrop has won three straight games over USC Upstate, High Point and USC Upstate again in the first round of the conference tourney.
In the Thursday win over USC Upstate, Winthrop’s Josh Ferguson doubled up on 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Hunter Hale had the points lead at 21 with four assists and five rebounds. Charles Falden added 17 points and five boards there as well.
Gardner-Webb is 5-1 ATS in their last six after a straight-up win and 5-0 ATS in their last five neutral-site games. The over is 6-2 in Gardner-Webb’s last eight overall and 6-2 in their last eight after an ATS win.
Meanwhile, Winthrop is 1-5 ATS in their last six games after a straight-up win and 1-8 ATS in their last nine overall. The over is 7-0 in Winthrop’s last seven overall and the under is 26-8 in their last 34 neutral-site games.
This has been a nice eight-game stretch for Gardner-Webb. They’re 7-1 in that time (an 87-77 loss to Hampton being the only blemish), and are on a four game win streak during which they’ve hit 70 points every time. Seems the Bulldogs have figured a few things out.
Gardner-Webb won the last matchup between these teams, 74-70 at home. Winthrop has been on a mission in the last three games however, scoring 84 or more in each game. This should be a pretty fun matchup, but I'm leaning toward taking Gardner-Webb to eke into a cover.
