The VMI Keydets and the East Tennessee State Buccaneers meet in college basketball action from US Cellular Center on Saturday.
Coming into this Southern Conference Tournament matchup, VMI is 9-23 overall. After a three-game losing streak to UNCG, Chattanooga and Samford ahead of tourney play, VMI bagged a win over Samford on Friday.
In the win over Samford, VMI’s Jake Stephens led the way on 24 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Travis Evee added 15 points with three rebounds and three assists there, and Kamdyn Curfman had 14 points with four assists and one rebound.
Over on the East Tennessee State side, they’re sitting at 27-4 on the year. It’s been a nine-game winning streak for East Tennessee State, and they’ve taken out Samford, Wofford and Western Carolina in their last three.
In the win over Western Carolina, East Tennessee State’s lead scorer was Patrick Good with 26 points and one rebound. Bo Hodges added 13 points with seven rebounds and two assists, and Tray Boyd posted 10 points with four rebounds and four assists.
East Tennessee State is 5-1 ATS in their last six after an ATS loss and 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 as a favorite. The over is 9-4 in East Tennessee State’s last 13 overall and 5-2 in their last seven Saturday games.
Meanwhile, VMI is 5-2 ATS in their last seven Saturday games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 overall. VMI is 6-18 ATS in their last 24 neutral-site games and the over is 35-17 in their last 52 overall.
East Tennessee State suffered a bit of a scare in their last outing versus Western Carolina, putting up a rather tepid 68 points in a one-point victory. That makes just 128 points combined in ETSU’s last pair, which is a really low total when compared to the prior seven games when they were scoring really well.
As for VMI, that was a pretty great victory over Samford, and the Keydets have scored 174 points across their last two games. Still, I don’t think lightning will strike twice here and I feel better about East Tennessee State on the cover.
