The UTEP Miners and the Rice Owls meet in C-USA college hoops action from Tudor Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
The UTEP Miners will try to climb out of a jam near the middle of the C-USA standings, sitting at 7-10 in conference play after a 3rd straight win in the form of a 60-56 win over Middle Tennessee State last time out. Bryson Williams leads UTEP in scoring and rebounding with 17.9 PPG and 7 RPG while Souley Boum has 12.5 PPG and Daryl Edwards is right behind in 3rd with 12.4 PPG this season. Jordan Lathon also leads the Minders in assists with 2.9 APG this season. As a team, UTEP is averaging 66.7 points on 42.5% shooting from the field, 29.4% from 3-point range and 75.4% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 65.3 points on 41.6% shooting from the field and 30.9% from 3-point range this season. UTEP is 2-9 straight up and 5-5-1 against the spread on the road this season.
The Rice Owls will also try to get out of the same spot, also sitting at 7-10 in conference play after a 72-57 win over Southern Miss last time out. Trey Murphy III leads Rice in scoring with 13.5 PPG while Robert Martin is 2nd with 12 PPG and Ako Adams has 10.9 PPG this season. Drew Peterson is also averaging 10.7 PPG with team-highs of 6.7 RPG and 3.5 APG this season. As a team, Rice is averaging 73.8 points on 43.4% shooting from the field, 34.5% from 3-point range and 71.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 73.8 points on 45.3% shooting from the field and 32.4% from 3-point range this season. Rice is 8-6 straight up and 7-5 against the spread at home this season.
Head-to-head, the underdog is 12-4 ATS in the last 16 meetings between these two teams and the road team is 12-5 ATS in the last 17 meetings between these two teams.
The head-to-head trends point towards UTEP and the points, and the Miners already took down Rice in the first meeting just a couple of weeks ago. However, Rice has been much better at home than UTEP’s been on the road as the Miners are logging just 61.4 PPG on the road while the Owls are putting up 79.6 PPG at home this year. The Miners just haven’t been able to translate their success to the road this season, so I’ll lay the points with Rice at home in this one.
