The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and the UT-Arlington Mavericks meet in a Sun Belt conference tournament first round matchup in college basketball action from the College Park Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers come into this one as the #10-seed, finishing the year with an 8-12 record in conference play, finishing last in a three-way tiebreaker with Louisiana and Arkansas State but still sneaking into the conference tournament. DeVante Jones leads Coastal in scoring and assists with 16.6 PPG and 5.8 APG while Keishawn Brewton is 2nd in scoring with 14.5 PPG. Tommy Burton has 11.8 PPG and a team-high 7.5 RPG while Tyrell Gumbs-Frater has 11.3 PPG this season. As a team, Coastal Carolina is averaging 78.9 points on 45.3% shooting from the field, 34.1% from 3-point range and 70.8% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 77 points on 42.5% shooting from the field and 34.5% from 3-point range this season.
The UT-Arlington Mavericks will look to make moves as the #7-seed, finishing the year at 10-10 in conference play as part of their 14-17 overall record this season. David Azore leads UT-Arlington in scoring with 14.1 PPG while Brian Warren has 12.6 PPG and a team-high 3.7 APG this season. Sam Griffin has 9.3 PPG while Radshad Davis has 8.6 PPG and Jabari Narcis has 7.8 PPG and a team-high 6.6 RPG this season. As a team, UT-Arlington is averaging 70.9 points on 41.7% shooting from the field, 31% from behind the arc and 75.2% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 68.6 points on 41.4% shooting from the field and 30% from 3-point range this season.
I’ve gone back and forth on this game as I agree with UT-Arlington being favored, but the problem with laying this many points is that Coastal Carolina has proven that they can score in bunches and have the offense to keep up with whatever Arlington brings to the table. I’ll take my chances with Coastal Carolina and the points in this one.
