The Line: East Tennessee State Buccaneers -7.5 -- Over/Under: 146
The Western Carolina Catamounts and the East Tennessee State Buccaneers meet in college basketball action from US Cellular Center on Sunday.
Coming into this Southern Conference Tournament matchup, Western Carolina is 18-11 on the season. In the final four pre-tourney games, Western Carolina went just 2-2, but they got a big win over Mercer on Saturday.
In the victory over Mercer, Western Carolina’s Mason Faulkner led the team with 22 points, four assists and five rebounds. Carlos Dotson added 19 points with five rebounds and one assist there, and Onno Steger had 13 points with five rebounds and one assist.
Over on the East Tennessee State side, they’re 28-4 on the season. Coming into tournament time, East Tennessee State had a nine-game winning streak, and kept it going with a 70-57 win over VMI.
In the win over VMI on Saturday, East Tennessee State’s leading scorer was Daivien Williamson with 15 points and three assists. Isaiah Tisdale added 12 points, eight reoubnds and one assist in that one, and Tray Boyd was also in double-figures with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.
East Tennessee State is 5-2 ATS in their last seven games after an ATS loss and the over is 9-5 in their last 14 overall. The under is 7-2 in East Tennessee State’s last nine neutral-site games and 15-8 in their last 23 games after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, Western Carolina is 3-6 ATS in the last nine neutral-site games and the under is 5-1 in their last six games after an ATS win. Western Carolina is 2-5 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games as an underdog as well.
East Tennessee State has been rolling right along during this winning streak, despite a couple of close calls and two down offensive games versus Wofford (60 points) and WCU (one-point win) heading into the tournament. ETSU didn’t really have a lot of trouble with VMI on Saturday, and they’re playing great ball right now.
As for Western Carolina, they had a little trouble shaking off Mercer in the first half (29-28), but got rolling from there and ended up cruising to a big victory. The last time these teams met up was a 68-67 home win for ETSU so this one should be close as well. I’m sticking with East Tennessee State on the cover here but it’ll be tight.
