The Line: Appalachian State Mountaineers -4.5 -- Over/Under: 147
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and the Appalachian State Mountaineers meet in a Sun Belt conference tournament college basketball matchup from the Holmes Convocation center on Monday night.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will look to cause another upset after picking up a 63-62 win over UT-Arlington in their first round matchup. DeVante Jones leads Coatal Carolina in scoring and assists with 17 PPG and 5.7 APG while Keishawn Brewton has 14.6 PPG and Tommy Burton has 11.8 PPG with a team-high 7.4 RPG this season. Tyrell Gumbs-Frater also has 11.2 PPG for the Chanticleers this season. As a team, Coastal Carolina is averaging 78.9 points on 45.3% shooting from the field, 34.1% from 3-point range and 70.8% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 77 points on 42.5% shooting from the field and 34.5% from 3-point range this season. Coastal Carolina is 7-6 straight up and 6-7 against the spread on the road this season.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers come into the tournament as the #6-seed, finishing with an 11-9 mark in conference play as part of their 17-14 mark overall this season. Justin Forrest leads the Mountaineers with 17.3 PPG and 2.9 APG while O’Showen Williams is 2nd in scoring with 12.9 PPG and Isaac Johnson is 3rd in scoring and tops in rebounding with 11 PPG and 7.7 RPG this season. As a team, Appalachian State is averaging 68.3 points on 43.1% shooting from the field, 30.9% from 3-point range and 66.9% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 66.8 points on 42.4% shooting from the field and 32.2% from 3-point range this season. Appalachian State is 9-5 straight up and 3-9 against the spread at home this season.
I get Appalachian State being favored here at home, but the problem for me is that the road team won both of the head-to-head meetings outright this season and we’ve seen in other tournaments across the country that the lower-seeded teams that have a game to work off the rust and the kinks tend to have some success in the next game at least. App State also didn’t do a great job covering the number at home and Coastal has the offense to push their way past the Mountaineers if the shots are falling. I’ll take a stab at the Chanticleers and the points in this one.
