The UIC Flames and the Northern Kentucky Norse meet in the Horizon League championship game from the Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Tuesday night.
The UIC Flames booked their spot in the conference championship game as the #4-seed by taking down top-seeded Wright State in a 73-56 upset win on Monday. Tarkus Ferguson leads the Flames with an average of 14.1 PPG, 5.9 RPG and 4.9 APG while Marcus Ottey has 11.6 PPG in 23 games and Godwin Boahen has 10.4 PPG for UIC this season. As a team, UIC is averaging 68.3 points on 43.9% shooting from the field, 34.3% from 3-point range and 68.4% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 69.7 points on 41% shooting from the field and 29.2% from 3-point range this season.
The Northern Kentucky Norse punched their ticket to the title game after an 80-69 win over Green Bay in their semi-final matchup on Monday. Dantez Walton has 16.3 PPG while Tyler Sharpe has 14.9 PPG and Jalen Tate has 13.4 PPG in 20 games this season. Trevon Faulkner has 12.1 PPG while Bryson Langdon has a team-high 3.3 APG and Adrian Nelson has a team-high 6.6 RPG this season. As a team, Northern Kentucky is averaging 72.2 points on 43.1% shooting from the field, 30.7% from 3-point range and 68.6% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 65.3 points on 41.5% shooting from the field and 29.6% from 3-point range this season.
I've had a hard time picking a side in this one, but the more I think about it, Northern Kentucky is the better team, but UIC is the team we've seen in different conference all over the last week or so, making noise against the higher seeds. Granted, the Norse have had a game to shake off the rust, but the Flames have looked good in the conference tournament so far and I'm expecting a battle here that could come down to the final shot. I'll take my chances with UIC and the points in this one.
