The Rice Owls and the FIU Panthers meet in a C-USA tournament first round matchup from the Ford Center at the Star on Wednesday night.

The Rice Owls enter the conference tournament as the #12-seed, finishing the year with a 7-11 conference record as part of their 15-16 overall mark this season. Trey Murphy III leads the Owls in scoring with 13.6 PPG while Robert Martin has 12 PPG and Ako Adams has 11 PPG. Drew Peterson has 10.7 PPG and team-highs of 6.5 RPG and 3.5 APG this season. As a team, Rice is averaging 73.8 points on 43.1% shooting from the field, 34.1% from 3-point range and 72% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 73.9 points on 45.2% shooting from the field and 32.6% from 3-point range this season.

The FIU Panthers come in as the #5-seed, finishing the year with a 9-9 conference record as part of their 18-13 overall mark this season. Devon Andrews leads FIU in scoring with 15.4 PPG while Osasumwen Osaghae has 12.8 PPG and a team-high 8.1 RPG this season. Trejon Jacob has 11.3 PPG while Antonio Daye Jr. has 10.3 PPG and a team-high 4.8 APG this season. As a team, FIU is averaging 76.5 points on 45.4% shooting from the field, 34.8% from 3-point range and 65.2% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 72.4 points on 42.2% shooting from the field and 28.6% from 3-point range this season.

Head-to-head, the favorite is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.

I get FIU being favored here as the higher seed, but we’ve seen in other tournaments this season the lower seed give the higher seed a run for their money and Rice has shown the offensive chops to with what FIU’s brought to the table for much of the season. The Panthers were solid for much of the year, but the Panthers scoring dried up at times this season and I think the Owls maybe be able to capitalize and pull off the upset here. I’ll take a shot with Rice and the free bucket here.

Chris’s Pick Rice +2
