The Southern Utah Thunderbirds and the Northern Colorado Bears meet in a Big Sky tournament quarter-final matchup in college basketball action from CenturyLink Arena on Thursday night.
The Southern Utah Thunderbirds come into the quarterfinals fresh off of their 75-69 first round win over Idaho last time out. As a team, Southern Utah is averaging 72.7 points on 45.1% shooting from the field, 32.9% from 3-point range and 71.8% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 66.2 points on 39.7% shooting from the field and 30.3% from 3-point range this season.
The Northern Colorado Bears enter the conference tournament as the #2-seed, finishing the year with a 15-5 conference record as part of their 22-9 overall mark this season. Jonah Radebaugh leads the Bears in scoring and assists with 16.5 PPG and 6.5 APG to go along with 6.3 RPG while Bodie Hume has 13.9 PPG and Trent Harris has 11.1 PPG this season. Kai Edwards has 9.4 PPG and a team-high 7.1 RPG this season. As a team, Northern Colorado is averaging 74.3 points on 46.8% shooting from the field, 38.4% from 3-point range and 66.7% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 62.7 points on 44.2% shooting from the field and 28% from 3-point range this season.
I’ve gone back and forth on this one as Southern Utah has hung with Northern Colorado this season and we’ve seen these lower seeds that have had a game to shake off the rust give the higher seeds that are rested a run for their money. However, Northern Colorado has been the better team for much of the season and have the better team side-by-side, so I’ll lay the points with Northern Colorado here.
