The Jacksonville State Gamecocks and Alabama Crimson Tide meet Wednesday in college basketball action at the Coleman Coliseum.
The Jacksonville State Gamecocks won 13 games last season and ended up splitting their last eight games. Kayne Henry returns after averaging 10.9 points and 6.9 rebounds while Martin Roub averaged 5.1 points and two rebounds. Maros Zeliznak played in 12.3 minutes through 28 games and Juwan Perdue averaged 66 minutes through 16 games. The Jacksonville State Gamecocks lost their top-two players in Jacara Cross and De'Torrion Ware, and they also lost majority of their depth. Needless to say, this is going to be a tough start with so many new faces on the roster. However, Henry was really solid last season at both ends of the floor and should be ready to be the leader of this program.
The Alabama Crimson Tide are coming off a 16-win season and lost eight of their last eight of their last 12 games. Jaden Shackelford returns after averaging 15 points and 4.5 rebounds while John Petty Jr. averaged 14.5 points and 2.5 assists. Alex Reese averaged 8.8 points per game last season and Herbert Jones is back after grabbing 6.4 rebounds. Alabama says goodbye to its best player in Kira Lewis Jr., who was a first round selection in the NBA draft, but the rest of last years core remains intact. Alabama is obviously a football school and the basketball team isn’t taken that serious in the SEC, but this year has a chance to be a turning point. The Crimson Tide will be better than expected this season and should push for a bid in the Big Dance come March.
The Gamecocks are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 Wednesday games, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Crimson Tide are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The under is 4-1 in Gamecocks last 5 overall. The over is 9-3 in Crimson Tide last 12 home games.
The Jacksonville State Gamecocks bring in pretty much an entirely new team this season and it's going to take time before everything starts clicking and guys find their role. The Alabama Crimson Tide have improved their basketball program over the years and have one of the better rosters they've ever had. Alabama is a legit threat to make the NCAA Tournament this season and should look to set the tone early this year.
I'll lay the chalk with the Crimson Tide.
