The Indiana State Sycamores and the East Carolina Pirates meet in college basketball action from the Hertz Arena on Wednesday night.
The Indiana State Sycamores will look to build off of one of their better seasons in recent memory, finishing with an 18-12 record including an 11-7 conference record to finish in a tie for 3rd place. The Sycamores’ stay in the conference tournament was short-lived though, as Indiana State would fall to Missouri State in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley conference tournament. Tyreke Key is back for the Sycamores after posting 15.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game and Jake LaRavia also returns after logging 9.4 points and 5.9 rebounds in his freshman campaign. The Sycamores bolstered their lineup, replacing Jordan Barnes, who has now graduated, with Towson transfer Tobias Howard who had 10.2 points per game last season for the Tigers. As a team, Indiana State averaged 66.4 points per game on 45.4% shooting from the field, 36.5% from behind the arc and 71.6% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 66.8 points on 44.7% shooting from the field and 31.9% from 3-point range last season.
The East Carolina Pirates will be on the hunt for their first winning season since joining the AAC back in 2014-15 after a 11-20 overall record last season including a 5-13 mark in AAC conference play to finish with the #11 seed in the conference tournament, but the Pirates never got a chance to earn their spot in the tournament after the conference tournament was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Jayden Gardner is back after leading the Pirates with 19.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game last season, making a strong case for AAC player of the year but falling just short. The Pirates also get back Tristen Newton who had 11 points and 3.7 assists per game but it doesn’t stop there as the other three starters are back for the Pirates as well, so at least ECU has some continuity going into this season for head coach Joe Dooley. As a team, East Carolina is averaging 68.1 points per game on 42.1% shooting from the field, 28.1% from behind the 3-point line and 72.2% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 72.2 points on 42.8% shooting from the field and 33.7% from 3-point range last season.
