The Austin Peay Governors and the Omaha Mavericks meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Germain Arena.
Austin Peay is coming off a 21-12 finish last season, with a 14-4 record in the OVC. That result left the Governors in third place in the conference. As for Omaha, they went 16-16 in 2019-20, with a 9-7 Summit League mark. The Mavericks were tied for fourth in the conference standings. Austin Peay stumbled in non-conference play last season, finishing that stretch with a 6-7 record. The Governors started out OVC play with a 10-game winning streak though, and were off to the races. Austin Peay beat Eastern Illinois in the OVC Tournament 76-65, but their season ended with a loss to Murray State in the semifinals.
Moving on to 2020-21, the Governors retain their leading scorer in Terry Taylor after averaging a double-double last year on 21.8 points, 11.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocks last season. Jordyn Adams is also back, following his 17.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game last year.
Over on the Mavericks’ side, they had a pretty uneven season at .500 overall last year. Omaha started out well enough at 5-3, but then lost five games in a six-game stretch. The Mavericks would flirt with a winning record for the rest of the year, and were dispatched by Oral Roberts 79-52 in the quarterfinals of the Summit League Tournament.
This season, Omaha will finally get to utilize Marco Smith, and they’ll need the extra depth. The Mavericks are without three starters from last season, including leading scorers KJ Robinson (15.2 PPG) and JT Gibson (13.7 PPG). Look for the tandem of Matt Pile and Wanjang Tut to continue developing and contributing to the Omaha offense.
The Governors are 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight neutral-site games and 7-2 ATS in their last nine Wednesday games. The over is 18-7-1 in the Governors’ last 26 Wednesday games and the under is 4-0 in their last four overall.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 overall and 0-6-1 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games. The over is 10-4 in Omaha’s last 14 overall and the under is 4-0 in their last four neutral-site games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Austin Peay in this one. Omaha doesn’t have a lot of depth up front, and they’ll likely have to shuffle players around to different positions for a while before they get into the swing of things. That could make for some sloppy play in this opener. Austin Peay returns a little more experience, and should be able to utilize that to make a play at a cover here.
