The Idaho State Bengals and Santa Clara Broncos meet Wednesday in college basketball action at the Leavey Center.
The Idaho State Bengals won eight games last season and lost 14 of their last 16 games overall. Tarik Cool returns after averaging 12.6 points and 2.9 assists while Malik Porter returns after averaging 11.9 points and 5.2 rebounds. Austin Smellie is back after averaging 27.6 minutes per game last season, and those are the only three players from last year who are on this years roster. The Idaho State Bengals will have a lot of new faces on this team obviously, but they do return their top-two players from last season, including Cool who led the team in scoring and shot 36.3 percent from deep. Idaho State gives itself a fighting chance to compete this season with Cool and Porter leading the way, but they need to find some depth if they’re going to build on last years efforts.
The Santa Clara Broncos won 20 games last season but lost eight of their last 11 games. Josip Vrankic returns after averaging 12.5 points and 2.7 assists while DJ Mitchell returns after averaging 10.7 points and 5.2 rebounds. Guglielmo Caruso is back after grabbing 4.4 rebounds in 18 minutes per game and Keshawn Justice averaged 27.3 minutes through 32 contests. The Santa Clara Broncos return two of their three double-digit scorers from last season, including their best player in Vrankic, who was a second-team All-WCC selection. Santa Clara is led by good senior leadership and is a team that beat Washington State and Cal last season, so there’s potential on this squad. Of course, Santa Clara has to pad wins before conference play begins, which would do wonders for their confidence.
The Bengals are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 road games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Broncos are 7-20 ATS in their last 27 Wednesday games. The over is 15-2 in Bengals last 17 overall. The under is 4-1 in Broncos last 5 home games.
The Idaho State Bengals were in complete struggle mode the last time we saw them and they only return three players from last years roster. The Santa Clara Broncos had a successful season and return their best players from that group, including one of the better players in the WCC in Vrankic. This is a reasonable season opener where Santa Clara can flex its muscle and come away with a nice victory.
