The FAU Owls and the South Alabama Jaguars meet in college basketball action from the Mitchell Center on Wednesday night.
The FAU Owls will look to build on back-to-back winning seasons after posting 17 wins for the second straight year following a 17-15 overall record last year, including an 8-10 record in C-USA conference play to finish with the #7 seed, but the Owls wouldn’t have a chance to make some noise as the C-USA tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Owls and head coach Dusty May will have to move forward without a two of his primary ball-handlers from last year’s backcourt as Cornelius Taylor and Richardson Maitre left the program with Taylor going undrafted in the NBA draft after logging 11.6 points per game last year while Maitre transferred to Samford after putting up 9.7 points per game last season. The good news for FAU is that Jailyn Ingram is back after putting up 12 points and a team-high 5.4 rebounds per game last season. Michael Forrest and Karlis Silins will also see larger roles in the FAU lineup, having to fill the holes that were left within the team. As a team, FAU averaged 71.1 points on 42.6% shooting from the field, 30.5% from behind the arc and 73.7% from the foul line while allowing opponents to average 69.4 points per game on 44% shooting from the field and 33.9% from behind the arc last season.
The South Alabama Jaguars will be looking to build off of the program’s first 20-win season since 2009 after posting a 20-11 overall record, including a 13-7 record in Sun Belt conference play to finish in a tie for 2nd place but the Jaguars wouldn’t get a chance to turn that record into a potential postseason appearance as the Sun Belt tournament was also quickly scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So the bad news for South Alabama and head coach Richie Riley is that he loses his five top scorers from last year’s team as all five were seniors and have now moved on from the program, including four scorers in double figures for the Jags last season. The good news is that this is Richie Riley’s M.O., bringing in transfers and high profile transfers at that to reload for the following season and Riley did just that, bringing in Michael Flowers from Western Michigan after putting up 16.9 points per game last season for the Broncos while Sam Iorio joins Flowers after sitting out last year but had 13.3 points and 6.5 rebounds for American in 2018-19. Terrence Lewis also comes in from Iowa State after putting up 6 points per game for the Cyclones, but Lewis, a former four-star recruit, brings a lot more to the table than those numbers would indicate in terms of size and athleticism. The pieces are there for coach Riley, it’s just a matter of conforming them into another perfectly fit puzzle. As a team, South Alabama averaged 71.3 points per game on 47.1% shooting from the field, 33.1% from behind the arc and 72.5% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 67.5 points per game on 42.3% shooting from the field and 34.3% from 3-point range last season.
FAU is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games and 4-17 ATS in their last 21 Wednesday games while the under is 10-4 in their last 14 Wednesday games. South Alabama is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 Wednesday games. The road team is 8-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings between these two teams and the underdog is 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings as well.
It’s a bit weird that we’re only being asked to lay a couple of buckets with the Jaguars and maybe it’s because the road team and underdog have had so much success in this matchup. However, while both teams have a lot of turnover, this is something that South Alabama is used to and bringing in guys like Flowers and Iorio is big for the Jaguars while FAU losing Taylor and Maitre leaves a lot to be desired at the top of the lineup. I think we see a 7-point win for South Alabama, like 71-64, so I’ll lay the points with the Jaguars in this one.
