The St. Peter’s Peacocks and the St. John’s Red Storm meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Carnesecca Arena.
Saint Peter’s is coming off an 18-12 record last season with a 14-6 mark in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. That mark left the Peacocks in second place in the MAAC standings. As for Saint John’s, they went 17-15 overall last year and just 5-13 in the Big East. The Red Storm finished one spot out of the basement in the conference standings. St. Peter’s hit the skids right away last season, going just 3-6 in their first nine games. The Peacocks struggled initially with the MAAC schedule on a 3-4 run, but smoothed things out from there to finish with just two losses over their final 13 games. The Peacocks beat Iona in the first round of the tournament before the season was called off.
This year, St. Peter’s returns a few key players from last season’s campaign. Junior KC Ndefo led the team with averages of 8.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 2.4 blocks last season and is back on the roster. Aaron Estrada (8.1 PPG) departed this year, so guys like Doug Edert (7.8 PPG) will have an opportunity to step up in 2020-21.
Over on the St. John’s side, they had a pretty choppy season in a tough Big East last season, finishing 17-15 overall and 5-13 in conference play. The Red Storm opened on a nice 11-2 run but struggled once the Big East games rolled around. St. John’s took a first-round conference tournament win over Georgetown but their second round game was called off at halftime.
This season, the Red Storm will have some production to account for on the floor, as lead scorer LJ Figueroa and his 14.5 points per game have departed. With Mustapha Heron (13.8 PPG) gone as well, there are plenty of opportunities for younger players here.
St. Peter’s is 13-5 ATS in their last 18 road games and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Wednesday games. The Peacocks are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall and the under is 4-1 in their last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Red Storm are 4-1 ATS in their last five Wednesday games and 4-1 ATS in their last five overall. St. John’s is 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 home games and the under is 6-1 in the last seven Wednesday games.
PICK: I like St. Peter’s here. It’ll probably take a few games before we really get a feel for what the Red Storm are going to look like this season, and the team may have to make some adjustments before finding a good balance of production. Considering the Peacocks are returning some experienced players with solid floor chemistry, I like St. Peter’s to hang around well enough to get into a cover in the opener.
