The Toledo Rockets and the Oakland Grizzlies meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Athletics Center O’rena. Toledo is 2-0 so far following wins over Valparaiso and Detroit. Toledo took on Valparaiso in their first game this year. The Rockets held a slim two-point lead at halftime and eventually powered out a 69-61 win. Top scorer for Toledo was JT Shumate with 20 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
In their second outing of the season, the Rockets played Detroit. Toledo was up 43-35 at the break and kept the Titans at bay in an 81-73 win. Ryan Rollins topped the team on 19 points with five boards and four assists in that one.
Over on the Oakland side, they kept pace with West Virginia reasonably well in their opener, but ultimately fell 60-53 and were outscored in both halves. Jamal Cain led the team on 15 points with seven rebounds and Micah Parrish had 10 points and 12 boards.
In game two against Oklahoma State, the Grizzlies had a tense matchup on their hands. Oakland held a 30-22 halftime edge and needed every bit of it in a 56-55 victory. Jalen Moore was the leading scorer there on 16 points, six assists and three rebounds.
Oakland is 1-4 ATS in their last five Wednesday games and 11-5 ATS in the last 16 at home. The Grizzlies are 4-1 ATS in their last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Rockets are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five overall and 11-5 ATS in their last 16 at home. Toledo is 1-3-1 ATS in their last five as a favorite.
PICK: I’m going to try Oakland in this one. The Grizzlies have had a pair of relatively tough matchups against major schools in their first pair, and they’ve performed admirably in both. Oakland shot a tepid 38.5 percent from the floor in the win over the Cowboys, but outworked the opposition on the boards 35-31 to help with the win.
As for Toledo, they’ve got a couple of nice wins under their belt and are getting solid contributions from up and down the roster. This should be a fun matchup, but ultimately I like Oakland better on a cover/win.
