The Youngstown State Penguins and the Binghamton Bearcats meet Sunday in college basketball action from the Events Center.
Youngstown State has played just one game so far this season. That one was a 20-point win over Point Park on Wednesday. As for Binghamton, they’re sitting at 0-2 this year. The Bearcats lost to Marist in consecutive games last weekend. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Youngstown State is coming off an 18-15 overall record last year, with a 10-8 mark in Horizon League play. That result left the Penguins in a tie for fourth place in the conference standings. Youngstown State took out Milwaukee in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament but fell to UIC 67-61 in the quarterfinals.
On to 2020-21, and the Penguins have a win in the books 72-52 over Point Park. Youngstown State had a slim 26-25 lead at the break, but really turned it on in the second half with 46 points. Leading the way scoring was Shemar Rathan-Mayes with 17 points and five assists with two rebounds. Garrett Covington doubled up on 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists as well.
Over on the Binghamton side, they got their season going last weekend with a pair of close losses to Marist. The first was a 68-65 overtime heartbreaker on Saturday. Brenton Mills led the way for the Bearcats in that one with 20 points, five rebounds and three assists. Thomas Bruce doubled up on 14 points and 10 rebounds also.
Game two on Sunday was more of the same for Binghamton: a 64-60 loss to Marist. Mills again topped the team on 19 points with seven rebounds and two assists, and Bruce was the only other double-digit scorer with 12 points and two rebounds. Dan Petcash led the rebounding with 11, scoring four with two assists.
Binghamton is 4-0 ATS in their last four home games and 5-1 ATS in the last six overall. The over is 5-1 in the Bearcats’ last six overall and 5-1 in the last six home games.
Meanwhile, Youngstown State is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 overall and 5-2 ATS in their last seven versus a team with a losing straight-up record. The under is 4-1 in the Penguins’ last five overall and 4-1 in their last five Sunday games.
PICK: I’m going to lean toward Binghamton here. Sure, the Bearcats have opened with a couple of losses, but were able to hang right with Marist in both games. Binghamton has a few pretty good scorers at the top end of their roster, and enough rebounding talent to swing the tide of a game. Youngstown State came out flat in the first half of their opener, and if they can’t get it going early the Bearcats will have a great opportunity to bang out a cover in this one.
