Mercer has gotten off to a great start so far, and none of their games has been decided by fewer than 10 points. The Bears took out North Georgia 79-48, then Georgia Tech 83-73 and Georgia State 86-69. Last weekend Mercer kept it going with wins over CIU 88-62 and Southern Wesleyan 96-85.
In the win over the Warriors, Mercer’s leading scorer was Ross Cummings on 24 points, five rebounds and two assists. Maciej Bender added 20 points with six boards, and Felipe Haase had a nice line on 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Bears.
Over on the Georgia Southern side, they came out of the gate with three nice wins, but then were blown out on Friday. The Eagles started off with victories 97-65 over Florida National, 91-79 over Coastal Georgia and 72-69 over USC Upstate. In their last appearance, Georgia Southern took a blowout loss to Davidson 77-45.
In the loss to the Wildcats, Georgia Southern’s lead scorer was Zack Bryant, the only one in double-figures with 16 points and two assists. The next-highest contributor for the Eagles was Eric Boone with six points, and David Viti scored five with two rebounds in seven minutes off the bench.
The Eagles are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and 1-4 ATS in their last five overall. The under is 8-2 in Georgia Southern’s last 10 overall and the over is 6-2 in their last eight at home versus a team with a winning road record.
Meanwhile, the Bears are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games and 1-5 ATS in their last six Sunday games. Mercer is 6-1 ATS in the last seven overall and the under is 21-7 in their last 28 overall.
PICK: I’m sticking with Mercer. Sure, the Bears have played a few small schools who weren’t necessarily up to par on the court, but there’s no denying the results. Mercer has been on an offensive tear this year, piling in 79 more points in each outing and 83 or more in four of five. Georgia Southern has a few good scoring outings under their belt this season, but really deflated in the Davidson game. I think Mercer will get off to a nice start here and manage a cover.
