The Winthrop Eagles and the USC Upstate Spartans meet Sunday in college basketball action from GB Hodge Center.
Winthrop enters this one at 3-0 so far. The Eagles took out UNCG and Little Rock in their first two games before beating USC Upstate on Saturday. As for USC Upstate, they’re 0-5 this year. The Spartans have lost to Eastern Kentucky, Georgia Southern and Winthrop in their last three outings. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Winthrop began the year with a couple of solid wins. The first one came 75-67 against USC Greensboro. The Eagles were up by just one point at halftime in that one, but pulled away with 43 points in the second. Game two against Little Rock was similarly tight most of the way, but Winthrop was able to prevail 80-75.
In the Saturday game against USC Upstate, Winthrop rolled the whole way, cruising to a 95-77 win. Leading the way for the Eagles in that one was Josh Corbin with 17 points, one rebound and one steal. Adonis Arms added 13 points with eight rebounds and two assists as well.
Over on the USC Upstate side, they came out of the gate with four straight losses, only getting close in one. First was an 82-72 loss to Southern Wesleyan, then a 91-63 loss to Furman. Game three was another double-digit loss 95-78 to Eastern Kentucky, then the Spartans lost to Georgia Southern 72-69 last weekend.
In the Saturday blowout loss against Winthrop, USC Upstate’s top contributor was Everette Hammond on 18 points, four assists and four rebounds. Tommy Bruner had a solid line on 7-of-16 shooting with 14 points, one rebound, five assists and three steals as well.
The Spartans are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games as an underdog, and 11-5 ATS in their last 16 home games. The over is 7-1 in USC Upstate’s last eight games as an underdog and also 7-2 in their last nine overall.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games as a favorite and 15-4 in their last 19 road games. Winthrop is 5-1 ATS in their last six overall and the over is 9-3 in their last 12 overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Winthrop. The Eagles came out of the gate with two pretty strong performances in their first pair, logging a combined total of 155 points. Conversely, the Spartans have mostly flailed in the early-going, and their first three games weren’t even close. Saturday’s game shows how lopsided this matchup can potentially be, and even with a thicker line I think Winthrop can repeat the result.
