It’s been a pretty rough campaign for Mississippi Valley State so far, and they haven’t been close in any of their games. The Delta Devils have lost to Arkansas 142-62, North Texas 116-62, Wyoming 97-61, Grand Canyon 88-49, Western Kentucky 96-69 and Memphis 94-57 over their first half-dozen outings.
In the loss to the Tigers on Tuesday, Mississippi Valley State’s top scorer was Treylan Smith with 19 points, four assists and two rebounds. Caleb Hunter was also in double-digits with 15 points, three rebounds and three assists, while both Kam’ron Cunningham and Devin Gordon scored nine points apiece.
Over on the Vanderbilt side, it’s been a while since we’ve seen them on the court; November 27 to be exact. Since then, the Commodores have had to cancel four straight games due to virus issues. The good news is that Vanderbilt seems ready to go again and is coming off a victory 77-71 against Valparaiso.
In the win over the Crusaders, Vanderbilt’s top scorer was Scotty Pippen Jr. with 25 points, there rebounds and four assists. Maxwell Evans was also in double-figures there with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Dylan Disu pulled down 11 rebounds with six points.
The Commodores are 19-8 ATS in their last 27 Sunday games and 0-3-1 ATS in their last four versus a team with a losing straight-up record. The over is 5-0 in Vanderbilt’s last five overall and the under is 12-4-1 in their last 17 Sunday games.
Meanwhile, Mississippi Valley State is 1-7 ATS in their last eight versus a team with a winning straight-up record and 1-4 ATS in their last five after allowing more than 90 points in their previous game. The over is 8-3-1 in the Devils’ last 12 road games and 9-3-1 in their last 13 overall.
PICK: I’m sticking with Vanderbilt, but staying away from this one in reality. It’s been so long since we’ve seen the Commodores on the court; they may be rusty, or they may jump right back into the swing of things. The good news is that MS Valley State is a good matchup to readjust themselves with. The Delta Devils have been hemorrhaging points on defense, giving up 88 or more in every single game. It shouldn’t be hard for Vanderbilt to score in this one, but the spread is going to be thick pretty much everywhere.
