The San Diego Toreros and the Cal Poly Mustangs meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Mott Athletic Center.
San Diego enters this one at 0-2 so far. The Toreros have fallen to UCLA and Nevada in their first two games. As for Cal Poly, they’re 2-2 this season. San Diego opened up the season with a blowout loss to UCLA, falling 83-56. The Toreros were down 33-23 at the half in that one and it only got worse from there. Tops in scoring for San Diego was Joey Calcaterra with 18 points, three assists and one rebound. Yauhen Massalski added 14 boards and nine points as well.
In game two against Nevada, San Diego got closer on the scoreboard but still eventually fell 79-72. Frankie Hughes was the Toreros’ top scorer in that one with 22 points, two rebounds and one assist. Calcaterra added 12 points with two rebounds and one assist.
Over on the Cal Poly side, it’s been a mixed bag so far with a 2-2 record. The Mustangs opened up with a win over Bethesda 100-46, then consecutive losses to San Francisco 88-60 and Santa Clara 76-69. Cal Poly got a win 75-71 over San Jose State in their last game Sunday.
In the win over the Spartans, Cal Poly’s top contributor was Alimamy Koroma with 19 points and seven boards. Brantly Stevenson added 17 points with eight rebounds and three assists, while Keith Smith finished on 13 points, four boards and five assists.
Cal Poly is 18-44 ATS in their last 64 home games and 7-17-1 ATS in their last 25 after an ATS win. The over is 5-1 in the Mustangs’ last six overall and 28-11 in their last 39 Wednesday games.
Meanwhile, the Toreros are 0-6 ATS in their last six overall and 0-5 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss. San Diego is 0-4 ATS in their last four road games and the over is 4-0 in their last four road games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Cal Poly, but I’m probably staying away. Both teams have been pretty mediocre out of the gate, but the Mustangs have gotten better in their last pair since posting just 60 points against San Francisco. As for San Diego, they were able to hang around with Nevada on the scoreboard, but have been pretty uninspiring defensively in their first pair. I like the Mustangs to bang out a late cover in this one.
