The Saint Joseph’s Hawks and the Drexel Dragons meet Thursday in college basketball action from Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Saint Joseph’s comes in here at 0-2 so far. The Hawks have fallen to Auburn and Kansas in their first two outings of the season. As for Drexel, they’re 3-2 this season. the Dragons had a three-game winning streak snapped by La Salle in their last game. Saint Joseph’s opened the season with a tough 96-91 overtime loss to Auburn. The Hawks erased an eight-point deficit in the second half, but couldn’t finish the job. Tops in scoring for Saint Joseph’s in that one was Taylor Funk with 28 points and seven rebounds.
Game two against Kansas didn’t go well for Saint Joseph’s either, and they’d finish with a 94-72 blowout loss. Jack Forrest led the Hawks in scoring there, with 18 points and two rebounds. Both Ryan Daly and Dahmir Bishop scored 14 points apiece, combining for three assists and eight rebounds.
Over on the Drexel side, they opened the season with an 83-74 loss to Pittsburgh, but then promptly went on a three-game win streak. Those victories came 66-48 and 70-58 over Quinnipiac and 69-54 over Coppin State. Drexel couldn’t keep it going against La Salle though, falling 58-48 in their last outing.
In the loss to the Explorers, Drexel’s Camren Wynter was the lead scorer on 15 points, four rebounds and one assist. Zach Walton was also in double-figures there with 10 points, four rebounds and two assists, while James Butler chipped in nine points and nine boards.
Drexel is 3-1-1 ATS in their last five home games and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five overall. The under is 4-0 in the Dragons’ last four overall and 5-0 in their last five home games.
Meanwhile, the Hawks are 2-6 ATS in their last eight road games and 4-1 ATS in their last five Thursday games. Saint Joseph’s is 1-4-1 ATS in their last six overall and the over is 6-0 in the last six overall.
PICK: I’m going to go with Saint Joseph’s here. The Hawks nearly had a great win to start out the season against Auburn, but fell just short. The Kansas game was pretty ugly on the scoreboard, but Saint Joseph’s hung around pretty well considering their tepid shooting (34.7 percent). Drexel seems more comfortable in lower-scoring games this season and will want to slow the pace down here. Considering that, I don’t think they’ll be able to stifle the Hawks’ offense enough to prevent a Saint Joseph’s cover.
