The UC Irvine Anteaters and the Loyola Marymount Lions meet Thursday in college basketball action from Gersten Pavilion.
UC Irvine enters this matchup at 2-3 so far. The Anteaters had won consecutive games before falling to USC last Tuesday. As for Loyola Marymount, they’re 3-3 this year. The Lions had two games against UCSB last week, winning one of those. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
UC Irvine opened up the year with consecutive losses, falling 86-72 to Pepperdine and 77-58 to San Diego State. The Anteaters came back with consecutive wins, beating Bethesda 135-55 and La Sierra 104-54. Last week against USC, UC Irvine fell big 91-56 in their most recent appearance.
In the loss to the Trojans, UC Irvine’s top contributor was Dawson Baker with 17 points and three rebounds. Austin Johnson managed 10 points with seven boards and one assist, while Brad Greene chipped in eight points with six rebounds.
Over on the Loyola Marymount side, they’ve been a mixed bag this season. After beating Southern Utah in the opener, the Lions fell to Minnesota twice, then beat Long Beach State. LMU had a pair of games against UCSB last week, falling Monday 69-58 and winning Saturday 81-76.
In the Saturday win, Loyola Marymount’s top scorer was Dameane Douglas with 23 points, seven rebounds and one assist. Joe Quintana managed 22 points with three boards and two assists, while Ivan Alipiev posted 11 points and four rebounds.
Loyola Marymount is 3-1-1 ATS in their last five overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five home games. The under is 6-2 in the Lions’ last eight after an ATS win and the over is 4-1 in their last five home games.
Meanwhile, the Anteaters are 7-2 ATS in their last nine Thursday games and 0-4 ATS in their last four overall. UC Irvine is 0-4 ATS in their last four road games and the over is 5-2 in their last seven overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with LMU in this one. The Anteaters have posted a couple of great offensive outings against overmatched competition, notching a whopping 239 points in their two wins. Thing is, UC Irvine posted just 114 combined points in their last two losses, both against good teams. Loyola Marymount isn’t quite on that level, but the Lions have enough offense to post a good total here. I like LMU to break it open in the second half and cover.
