Houston Baptist opened up the season with four straight losses, and really weren’t close in any of the games. The Huskies fell 69-45 to TCU, then 100-77 to Arizona State, 102-75 to SMU and 86-64 to Rice. After a 93-60 win over Champion, Houston Baptist fell again to Rice 80-79.
In the Tuesday loss to the Owls, Houston Baptist’s top contributor was Pedro Castro with 19 points and nine rebounds. Za-Ontay Boothman added 15 points with four assists and one board, while Darius Lee chipped in 13 points, two rebounds and one assist in 12 minutes of action.
Over on the North Texas side, they’ve had a pretty choppy season so far. After destroying MS Valley State in the opener, the Green fell in three straight to Arkansas 69-54, Mississippi State 69-63 and West Virginia 62-50. North Texas got a win on Tuesday against AR-Pine Bluff 81-56 to stop the losing streak.
In the win over the Lions, North Texas’ Javion Hamlet led the team with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists. Zachary Simmons added 12 points with six rebounds, and Terence Lewis posted 11 points, five rebounds and two assists in 13 minutes of play.
The Mean Green are 20-9 ATS in their last 29 overall and 12-3 ATS in their last 15 home games. North Texas is 6-1 ATS in their last seven Thursday games and the over is 4-0 in their last four home games.
Meanwhile, the Huskies are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 road games and 6-1 ATS in the last seven overall. Houston Baptist is 10-21 ATS in their last 31 after an ATS win and the over is 7-2 in the last nine overall.
PICK: I’m going North Texas here. I’m probably staying away from this one in reality, though. North Texas’ two wins have come against a pair of bad teams, and they’ve got a good opportunity for another victory here. That said, the Huskies have scored pretty well in a few games this season and will likely be able to hang around in this one for a while. I like the Mean Green to pull away late and bag a cover, but this should be an interesting matchup.
