Dixie State has come out of the gate pretty well this year, and they’ve got some nice wins in the books already. The Trailblazers beat North Dakota 74-73 in their opener, then blew out St. Katherine 86-48 in game two. On Saturday against Denver, Dixie State kept it going with a 73-70 victory.
In the win over the Pioneers, Dixie State’s Cameron Gooden led the way with 23 points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal. Hunter Schofield posted a nice line off the bench in that game, notching 14 points, four rebounds and one steal in 16 minutes of action.
Over on the Southern Utah side, they opened up with a tough loss 85-83 to Loyola Marymount, but since then it’s been four straight victories. Those wins have come 95-47 over St. Katherine, 64-63 and 75-74 over Montana and 81-71 over Utah Valley.
In the victory over Utah Valley, Southern Utah’s leading scorer was Tevian Jones with 33 points, five rebounds and one assist. Maizen Fausett had a nice line there as well with 19 points, five rebounds and one assist, while Harrison Butler added 10 points and four boards off the bench.
The Thunderbirds are 2-6 ATS in their last eight Thursday games and 5-11 ATS in their last 16 home games. Southern Utah is 2-5 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win and 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall.
The Thunderbirds are also 11-28 ATS in their last 39 games as a home favorite and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five home games versus a team with a winning road record. The over is 7-0 in Southern Utah’s last seven after an ATS win and 7-1 in their last eight overall.
PICK: I’m sticking with Dixie State here. The Trailblazers have been pretty impressive in their first few games, eking out wins over teams that probably underestimated their scoring talents. Southern Utah has had some very tight victories during their streak, and three of their five games have each been decided by just one point. I think the Trailblazers have enough offense to keep pace here and bang out a cover.
