The Creighton Bluejays and the St. John’s Red Storm meet Thursday in college basketball action from Carnesecca Arena.
Creighton enters this one at 4-2 so far. The Bluejays are 1-2 in their last three games, with a win over Nebraska between losses to Kansas and Marquette. As for St. John’s, they’re 5-3 this year. The Storm have lost consecutive games to Seton Hall and Georgetown. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Creighton opened up the year with three straight wins, taking out ND State 69-58, Omaha 94-67 and Kennesaw State 93-58. The Bluejays took a tough loss to Kansas 73-72 in game four, but bounced back against Nebraska 98-74. Monday, Creighton fell again, this time to Marquette 89-84.
In the loss to the Eagles, Creighton’s Mitchell Ballock led the way on 26 points with six rebounds and three assists. Denzel Mahoney added 21 points with four rebounds and one assist, and Damien Jefferson posted 17 points with six rebounds and three assists.
Over on the St. John’s side, they kicked off the year on a 5-1 run. Outside of a loss to BYU, the Storm took out Saint Peter’s, La Salle, Boston College, Stony Brook and Rider in that stretch. Since then it’s been consecutive losses 77-68 to Seton Hall and 97-94 to Georgetown.
In the Sunday loss to the Hoyas, St. John’s top scorer was Isaih Moore with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Posh Alexander added 16 points, six assists and three rebounds, and Julian Champagnie doubled up on 13 points, 12 rebounds and two assists.
St. John’s is 1-5 ATS in their last six Thursday games and 1-4 ATS in their last five overall. The over is 6-2 in the Red Storm’s last eight overall and 8-0 in their last eight at home.
Meanwhile, the Bluejays are 5-2 ATS in their last seven home games and 1-6 ATS in the last seven Thursday games. Creighton is 13-5 ATS in their last 18 overall and the over is 4-1 in their last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Creighton here. The Bluejays’ record over their last three games doesn’t look all that inspiring, but the losses came to a great Kansas team and a hot-shooting Marquette squad that notched 57.1 percent (12-of-21) on three-pointers in that matchup. St. John’s is a good scoring team and should put up a decent amount of points here, but I think Creighton will assert themselves in this one like they did after their first defeat.
