Chicago State has been flat offensively all season, and it hasn’t helped that they’ve faced a few tough teams. The Cougars’ losses have come 84-61 to Ohio, 97-38 to Illinois, 74-44 to NC A&T, 78-56 to Eastern Illinois, 111-66 to Northwestern, 88-51 to Loyola IL and 91-62 to Illinois State.
In the loss to the Redbirds, Chicago State’s top scorer was Xavier Johnson on 22 points, five rebounds and two assists. Carlo Marble added 17 points with five boards, and Ke’Sean Davis had 12 rebounds, eight points and one assist.
Over on the Huskies’ side, they haven’t had any luck this season either. Northern Illinois opened with losses 65-61 to UIC, 73-53 to SIUE, 89-59 to Pittsburgh and 79-70 to Ball State. On Sunday Northern Illinois lost big to a good Iowa team 106-53.
In the loss to the Hawkeyes, Northern Illinois’ leading scorer was Adong Makuoi with 14 points and four rebounds. The only other Huskies player in double-figures there was Anthony Crump, who posted 10 points, five rebounds and two assists in 34 minutes on the floor.
The Huskies are 0-4 ATS in their last four home games and 0-6 ATS in their last six overall. NIU is 0-4 ATS in their last four after a straight-up loss and 0-4 ATS in the last four after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Cougars are 7-20 ATS in their last 27 road games and 17-37 ATS in their last 54 overall. Chicago State is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 Friday games and the over is 4-0 in their last four road games.
PICK: I’m going with Northern Illinois here. Granted, there’s not much to get excited about in this matchup, considering the teams are a combined 0-12. The good news is that someone gets to walk away with a W here. In any case, NIU has put up a couple of reasonable offensive outings this season, and have been within nine points in two games. Chicago State hasn’t scored more than 66 all year and is basically getting destroyed in every game. Northern Illinois should have enough offense to bang out a cover here.
