The Davidson Wildcats and the Rhode Island Rams meet Friday in college basketball action from Ryan Center.
Davidson enters this one at 3-3 so far. The Wildcats are 2-1 in their last three games, beating UNLV and Georgia Southern before falling to Charlotte. As for Rhode Island, they’re sitting at 3-4 this year. The Rams have lost to Wisconsin and Western Kentucky in their last two games. Davidson has been all over the place this year already, from close losses to big wins to blowout defeats. The Wildcats opened with a win over High Point, then lost to Texas and Providence by a combined three points. Davidson took out UNLV and Georgia Southern after that, but fell to Charlotte in this last game 63-52.
In the loss to the 49ers, Davidson’s Kellan Grady led the team in scoring with 23 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Lee Hyun-jung was the only other Wildcats player in double-figures in that one, posting 16 points with seven boards. Luka Brajkovic chipped in with eight points and five rebounds as well.
Over on the Rhode Island side, they kicked things off this year with losses to Arizona State and Boston College. Three straight wins followed for the Rams over South Florida, San Francisco and Seton Hall. Since then it’s been losses to Wisconsin 73-62 and Western Kentucky 68-65.
In the loss to the Hilltoppers, Rhode Island’s DJ Johnson led the way on 16 points with two rebounds. Daron Russell added 14 points with four rebounds and four assists, and Antwan Walker posted eight points with six boards.
The Rams are 6-0 ATS in their last six Friday games and 4-0-1 ATS in their last five overall. The under is 10-3 in Rhode Island’s last 13 home games and 8-2 in their last 10 after a straight-up loss.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss. The over is 3-1-1 in Davidson’s last five Friday games and 7-1-1 in their last nine road games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Davidson here. This is something of a tough matchup to gauge however, as both teams have shown flashes of emerging from mediocrity in the early-going this season. Rhode Island shot reasonably well in the Western Kentucky game (42.1 percent field goals) but were out-rebounded 38-28 by the Hilltoppers and couldn’t catch up in the second half. Davidson is coming off a flat performance themselves (34.0 percent field goals) but did a good job on the boards against the 49ers. I like the Wildcats to post a better offensive effort here and cover.
