The BYU Cougars and the San Diego State Aztecs meet in college basketball action from the Viejas Arena on Friday afternoon.
The BYU Cougars come into this game looking to add to their 6-2 record after an 82-64 win over Utah last time out. Connor Harding led the Cougars with 17 points on 6 of 8 shooting with 4 rebounds while Spencer Johnson added 16 points on 6 of 11 shooting with 4 threes and 6 rebounds and Richard Harward added 15 points on a perfect 7 of 7 shooting from the floor with 7 rebounds to cap off the trio of double-digit scorers for BYU in the win. Alex Barcello dished out a team-high 8 assists while Brandon Averette added 5 assists and a pair of steals. Caleb Lohner added 8 points and 10 rebounds as well in the victory for the Cougars. Barvello leads BYU in scoring and assists with 17.8 points and 3.9 assists per game while Lohner leads the Cougars in rebounding with 6.8 rebounds per game this season. As a team, BYU is averaging 77.8 points on 47.3% shooting from the field, 37.4% from 3-point range and 66.1% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 66.1 points on 40.1% shooting from the field and 35.1% from 3-point range this season.
The San Diego State Aztecs come into this one looking to remain unbeaten after improving to 5-0 with an 80-68 win over Arizona State last time out. Jordan Schakel led the Aztecs with 25 points on 9 of 15 shooting with 5 threes, 6 rebounds and a pair of steals. Nathan Mensah added 17 points on 7 of 12 shooting with 15 rebounds and 3 blocks and Matt Mitchell chipped in 14 points to cap off the trio of double-digit scorers for the Aztecs in the victory. BYU is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 games following a win. San Diego State is 13-5 ATS in their last 18 games against a team with a winning record and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games following a win while the under is 7-2 in their last 9 home games. The favorite is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
San Diego State is one of the toughest defensive units in the country so the Aztecs being favored at home makes sense without question. However, this line feels a bit thick to me as BYU has a lot of talent in their own right and are one of the few teams that has the chops to battle with San Diego State in terms of defense. The Cougars also shoot the ball extremely well and if they fall behind, their ability to shoot the three may serve them well here. All in all I think this is a 3-5 point game in the end, so I’ll take BYU and the points in this one.
