The Maine Black Bears and the Hartford Hawks meet Saturday in college basketball action from ChaseFamily Arena.
This will be Maine’s first outing of the 2020-21 college basketball season. It will also be the first installment of a weekend doubleheader between these teams with another game coming Sunday. As for Hartford, they’re sitting at 4-2 so far. The Hawks have won three straight games versus Fairfield (twice) and Central Connecticut State. Maine is coming off a disappointing 9-22 record overall last year, with a 5-11 mark in the America East. That result left the Black Bears just one spot out of the basement in the conference standings. Maine lost to Vermont 61-50 in the American East Tournament to end their season.
Moving on to 2020-21, and the Black Bears will have some new faces on the roster after losing three of five starters. The good news is that senior wing Nedeljko Priojovic is back after 10.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game last season. Stephane Ingo should be taking a step forward as well following 4.5 PPG and 5.2 RPG in his freshman campaign.
Over on the Hartford side, they opened up at 0-2 with losses to Connecticut 69-57 and Villanova 87-53. After that the Hawks hit their stride and won their next three outings. Those victories came 66-61 over Fairfield, 80-65 over Central CT State and 67-54 over Fairfield again.
In the win last Monday over Fairfield, Hartford’s Traci Carter led the team on 15 points with six assists and two rebounds. Moses Flowers added 13 points with seven boards, and Hunter Marks doubled up on 10 points, 11 rebounds and two assists.
The Hawks are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games and 10-4 ATS in their last 14 home games. Hartford is 20-7 ATS in their last 27 games overall and the over is 4-1 in their last five home games.
Meanwhile, Maine is 4-0 ATS in their last four Saturday games and 4-1 ATS in their last five road games. The under is 5-1 in the Bears’ last six Saturday games and 5-2 in their last seven overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Maine here. I’m probably staying away from this one in reality though; we haven’t seen the Hawks on the court since way back on December 7, and this will be Maine’s first game. It’ll be tough to know what to expect. In any case, Hartford has been solid on defense against bad teams in their last three games, but still underwhelming on the scoreboard. The Hawks have hit 70 points just once in five outings, so if Maine can find a good rhythm early I can see the Black Bears banging out a cover.
