The Eastern Washington Eagles and the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks meet Saturday in college basketball action from Walkup Skydome.
Eastern Washington enters this one at 1-4 overall. The Eagles took out College of Idaho in their fourth game but fell to Saint Mary’s on Tuesday. As for Northern Arizona, they’re sitting at 0-3 so far. This was originally going to be the second installment of a two-day doubleheader between these teams, but Friday’s matchup was postponed hours before tipoff due to virus issues. Eastern Washington has kicked off the season on an ugly 1-4 clip. The Eagles managed a win over College of Idaho in their fourth game, but otherwise fell to Washington State 71-68, Arizona 70-67, Oregon 69-52 and Saint Mary’s 80-75.
In the loss to Saint Mary’s, Eastern Washington’s Tanner Groves and Tyler Robertson posted 17 points apiece, while combining for three assists and 12 rebounds. Jacob Davidson added 15 points with three rebounds and two assists as well.
Over on the Northern Arizona side, they’ve opened up the year on an ugly skid themselves, going 0-3 in their first trio of outings. The Lumberjacks fell 96-53 to Arizona in the opener, then lost to UC Riverside 74-50. In game three it was another huge loss, this time 91-52 to Colorado State.
In the loss to the Rams, Northern Arizona’s lead scorer was Cameron Shelton on 18 points, two rebounds and one assist. Luke Avdalovic was the only other Lumberjacks player in double-figures in that one with 12 points, two assists and three boards.
The Lumberjacks are 1-5 ATS in their last six Saturday games and the over is 20-9 in their last 29 Saturday games. Northern Arizona is 2-6 ATS in their last eight home games and 1-6 ATS in their last eight versus a team with a losing straight-up record.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 7-1 ATS in their last eight Saturday games and the under is 5-0 in their last five Saturday games. Eastern Washington is 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games and 7-2 ATS in their last nine overall.
PICK: I’m sticking with Eastern Washington here. Neither of these teams has opened the season well, but the Eagles have been far more competitive. Northern Arizona notched a grand total of 155 combined points over their first three games, coughing up a whopping 261 points in that same stretch. It’s tough to know what either team will look like when they eventually get back to the court (and it’s hard to get intrigued about a pair of teams that are a combined 1-7) but should be a competitive game.
