The Valparaiso Crusaders and the Toledo Rockets meet Saturday in college basketball action from Savage Arena.
Valparaiso enters this game at 3-4 so far. The Crusaders are 3-1 in their last four games, falling to Central Michigan while otherwise beating Judson, SIUE and Purdue Calumet in that stretch. As for Toledo, they’re 5-3 this season. The Rockets have won consecutive games versus UMKC and Marshall in their last pair. Valparaiso opened up the season with losses to Vanderbilt, UIC and Purdue in their first three games. Since then it’s been a 3-1 run for the Crusaders, however. Outside of a loss 84-79 to Central Michigan, it’s been wins over Judson 85-45, SIUE 80-58 and Purdue Calumet 89-71 in the last four outings.
In the win over Purdue Calumet on Thursday, Valparaiso’s top scorer was Nick Robinson with 21 points, two rebounds and one assist. Both Connor Barrett and Ben Krikke notched 12 points apiece, combining for one assist and eight rebounds in the victory.
Over on the Toledo side, they opened up the season at 1-2 with a win over Oakland and losses to Bradley and Xavier. Since then it’s been a 4-1 stretch for the Rockets, with a loss to Michigan 91-71 and wins over Cleveland State, Eastern Michigan, UMKC and Marshall otherwise.
In Wednesday’s 96-87 win over Marshall, Toledo’s top contributor was Marreon Jackson with 23 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Ryan Rollins doubled up in that one with 16 points, 13 rebounds and two assists, while Setric Millner chipped in on 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Toledo is 5-17 ATS in their last 22 home games and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. The Rockets are 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 Saturday games and the under is 6-2 in their last eight home games.
Meanwhile, the Crusaders are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five road games and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games. The over is 5-2 in Valparaiso’s last seven road games and 5-2 in the last seven Saturday games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Toledo here. The Rockets have had a couple of scoring duds here and there (59 points against Bradley specifically) but overall they’ve been putting up points well. Toledo has hit 70 points in six of eight games so far. Valparaiso has been scoring quite well themselves against sketchy competition in their last four games, with 79 or more in each. This should be a pretty interesting matchup, but I like the Rockets offense to power out a cover in a high-scoring game.
