The Coppin State Eagles and the Virginia Tech Hokies meet Saturday in college basketball action from Cassell Coliseum.
Coppin State is sitting at 1-5 so far. Since their first win last week against UNC Greensboro, the Eagles have recorded a loss to UMBC. As for Virginia Tech, they’re currently 5-1 this season. The Hokies lost to Penn State last week but pulled off a great win over Clemson in their last game. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Coppin State hasn’t had much luck at all this year. The Eagles opened with four straight losses to Duke, George Washington, Drexel and Georgetown, all by double-digits. Coppin State got a win over UNCG 86-80 last Thursday, but then fell on Sunday to UMBC.
In the loss to the Retrievers, Coppin State’s top scorer was Koby Thomas on 14 points, six rebounds and one assist. Kyle Cardaci was the only other Eagles player in double-figures in the defeat, collecting 13 points, two rebounds and two assists in 30 minutes on the court.
Over on the Virginia Tech side, they kicked off the year well with four straight wins over Radford, Villanova, South Florida and VMI. The Hokies stumbled with a 75-55 loss to Penn State, but managed a nice victory over Clemson 66-60 on Tuesday.
In the win over the Tigers, Virginia Tech’s Tyrece Radford led the team on 15 points, two rebounds and one assist. Both Nahiem Alleyne and Keve Aluma notched 13 points apiece, combining for four assists and eight rebounds. Hunter Cattoor added 11 points and six boards as well.
Virginia Tech is 1-4 ATS in the last five after an ATS win and 2-6 ATS in their last eight after a straight-up win. The Hokies are 2-6 ATS in their last eight Saturday games and the under is 17-8 in their last 25 Saturday games.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five overall and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five as an underdog. The under is 20-7-1 in Coppin State’s last 28 Saturday games and 5-2-1 in their last eight games overall.
PICK: I’m sticking with Virginia Tech here. The Hokies are coming off a great effort against Clemson, holding the Tigers to 38.0 percent shooting from the field and out-rebounding the opposition 33-25 overall. It was a nice bounce-back after a flat game in the 20-point loss to Penn State. Coppin State has recorded a few good offensive outings this season, but they’ve been far too inconsistent to trust. The cover is there for Virginia Tech if they don’t have a hangover outing after the big victory.
