UMBC comes into this game at 4-1 so far. The Retrievers have won four straight games since losing their opener. As for Albany, they’re sitting at 0-1 after opening the season against UMBC. This will be a rematch of Saturday’s game, in which the Retrievers eked out a tense one-point win. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
UMBC opened up the year with a 70-62 loss to Georgetown, but then managed four straight wins. Those victories came 80-65 over St. Francis PA, 92-81 over George Washington, 76-61 over Delaware and 66-49 over Coppin State.
In Saturday’s game, UMBC was down 36-32 at halftime and had to fight back to get the win. The Retrievers ended up with a 65-64 win as the dust settled. Leading the way in scoring for UMBC was Brandon Horvath with 18 points, seven rebounds and one steal.
Over on the Albany side, they managed a disappointing 14-18 record overall last year, going 7-9 in America East play. That result left the Great Danes just two spots out of the basement in the conference standings. Albany fell in their first game of the America East Tournament 76-73 to Stony Brook, ending their season on a six-game skid.
In the opener Saturday, Albany put up a good effort overall but shot just 38.7 percent from the field and were out-rebounded 39-28. Antonio Rizzuto came off the bench to lead the team on 4-of-7 from 3-point range, notching 14 points, two rebounds and one assist.
The Great Danes are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 Sunday games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall. Albany is 12-28 ATS in their last 40 home games and the under is 4-1 in their last five Sunday games.
Meanwhile, the Retrievers are 13-4 ATS in their last 16 overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five road games. The over is 8-3 in UMBC’s last 11 Sunday games and 9-3 in their last 12 road games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with UMBC here. After a disappointing effort in the opener against Georgetown, the Retrievers bounced back with a nice four-game run. UMBC posted 76 or more points in three of those four wins. Saturday’s game was probably a lot closer than it should have been, but give Albany credit for opening with a competitive outing. Should be another good one, but I like UMBC on the cover.
