Chicago State hasn’t had much luck against anyone this season, and all their losses have come by double-digits. The Cougars fell to Ohio, Illinois, NC A&T, Eastern Illinois, Northwestern, Loyola IL and Illinois State in their first seven. On Friday it was another loss 64-54 to Northern Illinois.
In the loss to NIU, Chicago State’s Xavier Johnson managed 23 points with five rebounds, and Level Zeigler added 10 points with four assists and three boards. Coreyoun Rushin added eight points, eight rebounds and three assists as well.
Over on the Drake side, it’s been smooth sailing so far. The Bulldogs opened with wins over Kansas State, South Dakota, Omaha, St. Ambrose, McKendree and Air Force. In Friday’s game Drake kept it going with a 75-57 win over South Dakota.
In the victory over the Coyotes, Drake’s top scorer was Roman Penn with 25 points, five assists and two rebounds. Tremell Murphy posted 15 points with seven rebounds and one assist, while both DJ Wilkins and Shanquan Hemphill chipped in 12 points apiece.
Drake is 35-14-2 ATS in their last 51 home games and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. The Bulldogs are 5-0 ATS in their last five overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five Sunday games.
Meanwhile, the Cougars are 10-25 ATS in their last 35 road games and 18-37 ATS in their last 55 overall. Chicago State is 0-4 ATS in their last four versus a team with a winning straight-up record and the over is 4-1 in their last five overall.
PICK: I’m sticking with Drake in this one, but with that thick line I'm staying away in reality. There aren’t many positives to point to when it comes to Chicago State. They’ve been pretty abysmal so far. The Cougars coughed up 74 or more points in each of their first seven games, so it’s a bit of a small victory that they were able to hold NIU to 64 points and only lose by ten. In any case, Drake has recorded double-digit wins in each outing themselves, so there shouldn’t be much resistance on a Bulldogs cover if they play to their capabilities.
