The Georgetown Hoyas and the St. John’s Red Storm meet Sunday in college basketball action from Carnesecca Arena.
Georgetown comes into this one at 3-3 overall. The Hoyas are 2-1 in their last three outings, with wins over St. John’s and Coppin State surrounding a loss to Villanova. As for St. John’s, they’re 5-4 this season. The Storm are on a three-game losing streak, falling to Seton Hall, Georgetown and Creighton in that trio. Georgetown opened up the year at 1-2, beating UMBC before falling to Navy and West Virginia. Since then it’s been a 2-1 run for the Hoyas, however. Georgetown beat Coppin State 80-48, the lost to Villanova 76-63 and beat St. John’s 97-94.
In the win over the Red Storm last weekend, Georgetown’s Dante Harris posted 22 points with three rebounds and two assists. Jahvon Blair added 20 points with five rebounds and one assist, while Qudus Wahab doubled up on 17 points, 10 rebounds and one assist.
Over on the St. John’s side, it’s been quite the up-and-down season already. The Storm started out well at 5-1 (with a loss to BYU) but since have lost three straight. Those defeats came 77-68 to Seton Hall, 97-94 to Georgetown and 94-76 to Creighton on Thursday.
In the Thursday loss, St. John’s top scorer was Julian Champagnie with 17 points, five rebounds and two assists. Posh Alexander added 13 points with three assists and one rebound, and Dylan Addae-Wusu chipped in 12 points with three boards.
The Red Storm are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 after a double-digit loss at home. The over is 4-1 in St. John’s last five overall and 9-0 in their last nine home games.
Meanwhile, the Hoyas are 2-7 ATS in their last nine road games and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 after an ATS win. Georgetown is 4-0 ATS in their last four Sunday games and the under is 4-1 in their last five after an ATS win.
PICK: I’m sticking with Georgetown here. You could probably make a case for either team however, considering how close Georgetown’s overtime win was last weekend. In any case, the Hoyas were out-rebounded 45-34 with fewer assists (21-17) and more turnovers (17-15) than St. John’s had in their last matchup. Georgetown powered out the win with good work under the basket; 10 blocks and 54.0 percent shooting from the field. This should be another great matchup, and I think the Hoyas can eke out a cover.
