The Creighton Bluejays and the UConn Huskies meet Sunday in college basketball action from Gampel Pavilion.
Creighton enters this one at 5-2 so far. The Bluejays fell to Marquette on Monday but took out St. John’s in their last game on Thursday. As for the Huskies, they’re 3-0 this season. Connecticut has taken out Central CT State, Hartford and USC in succession across their first trio. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Creighton has played well overall this year, but they’ve also got a couple of tough losses. The Bluejays kicked off with wins over ND State, Omaha and Kennesaw State before a 73-72 loss to Kansas. Since then it’s been a win 98-74 over Nebraska, an 89-84 loss to Marquette and a 94-76 win over St. John’s.
In the win over the Red Storm, Creighton’s top scorer was Marcus Zegarowski with 20 points, five assists and two rebounds. Christian Bishop managed 11 points with 10 rebounds, and Damien Jefferson also doubled up on 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Over on the Connecticut side, it’s been smooth sailing (with one close escape) so far across three games. The Huskies kicked off the year with a 102-75 win over Central CT State, then beat Hartford 69-57. Connecticut eked one out over USC in their last outing on December 3.
In the win over the Trojans, Connecticut’s James Bouknight managed 18 points with seven rebounds and two assists, while Tyrese Martin posted 11 points with seven rebounds. Isaiah Whaley added 10 points with five rebounds as well.
Connecticut is 1-4-2 ATS in their last seven Sunday games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall. The over is 7-2 in the Huskies’ last nine overall and 8-2 in their last 10 home games.
Meanwhile, the Bluejays are 14-5 ATS in their last 19 games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five road games. The under is 15-5 in Creighton’s last 20 road games and the over is 5-1 in their last six overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Creighton here. The Huskies posted a pretty solid effort in their last game versus USC, but shot just 34.5 percent from the field with 11 turnovers and 21 fouls. The Bluejays bounced back well from their loss to Marquette, shooting 56.7 percent from the field and out-rebounding St. John’s 44-26. I think this one may be close initially but Creighton should be able to pull away and cover.
