East Tennessee State opened up the year with a 1-3 mark over their first quartet, beating Middle Tennessee while otherwise falling to Abilene Christian, Austin Peay and UAB. Since then it’s been three straight wins for the Bucs, though. Those came 65-60 over Gardner-Webb, 96-54 over CIU and 62-53 over Lee.
In the win over the Flames, East Tennessee State’s top scorer was Damari Monsanto with 11 points, six rebounds and one assist. Vonnie Patterson was the only other Buccaneers player in double-figures there with 10 points, three rebounds and one assist.
Over on the Alabama side, they kicked off the year at 3-1 in their first four. The Tide lost to Stanford but took out JSU, UNLV and Providence. Since then it’s been a loss 64-56 to Clemson, a win 83-80 over Furman and a loss 73-71 to Western Kentucky.
In the loss to the Hilltoppers, Alabama’s leading contributor was Herb Jones with 16 points and four boards. Jordan Bruner added 14 points with six rebounds and Jaden Shackelford had 12 points, four rebounds and one assist for the Tide.
Alabama is 0-4-1 ATS in their last five Tuesday games and 1-4-1 ATS in their last six home games. The Tide are 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 overall and the over is 5-2 in their last seven Tuesday games.
Meanwhile, the Bucs are 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall and 7-2 ATS in their last nine versus a team with a winning straight-up record. ETSU is 5-1 ATS in the last six Tuesday games and the under is 41-20 in their last 61 road games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Alabama. I’m not thrilled about it, though. The Tide have played pretty flat over their last few games, and are coming off a tepid outing against WKU. Alabama shot just 39.3 percent from the field and was out-rebounded 38-35. When the Tide are “rolling,” they score pretty well—81 or more points in four of seven games this season. If Alabama can get off to a nice start and hit some shots early I can see them eking out a cover in this one.
