The Purdue Boilermakers and the Iowa Hawkeyes meet Tuesday in college basketball action from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Purdue sits at 6-2 so far this season. The Boilermakers are riding a three-game winning streak, taking out Indiana State, Ohio State and Notre Dame in that time. As for Iowa, they’re 6-1. The Hawkeyes opened with a half-dozen straight wins before falling to Gonzaga in their last game. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Purdue kicked off the year with a 3-2 clip, bagging wins over Liberty, Oakland and Valparaiso while otherwise falling to Clemson and Miami. Since then it’s been three nice wins for the Boilermakers. Those victories came 80-68 over Indiana State, 67-60 in an Ohio State upset and 88-78 over Notre Dame.
In the Saturday win over the Irish, Purdue’s Eric Hunter and Sasha Stefanovic each scored 18 points apiece, combining for 10 assists and seven rebounds. Trevion Williams added 14 points with seven rebounds and two assists, while Mason Gills got 12 points with nine boards.
Over on the Iowa side, they rolled right along with wins over NC Central, Southern U, Western Illinois, North Carolina, Iowa State and Northern Illinois in their first half-dozen games. On Saturday the Hawkeyes took their first loss against No. 1-ranked Gonzaga 99-88, however.
In the loss to the Bulldogs, Iowa’s Luka Garza took a double-double on 30 points, 10 rebounds and two assists. Joe Wieskamp almost hit that threshold on 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Joe Toussaint posted 14 points with two boards and two assists in 18 minutes of court time.
Iowa is 19-5-2 ATS in their last 26 home games and 19-7-3 ATS in their last 29 overall. The Hawkeyes are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 after a straight-up loss and the over is 16-5 in their last 21 overall.
Meanwhile, the Boilermakers are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 Tuesday games and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five overall. Purdue is 4-10-2 ATS in their last 16 road games and the over is 15-6 in their last 21 overall.
PICK: I’m going to take the Boilermakers here. This should be one of the better matchups on the Tuesday college basketball slate though, and a fun game to watch. Purdue is strutting in here after high-profile wins over Ohio State and Notre Dame, looking to further prove themselves on the national stage. Iowa is licking their wounds after a flat game against a great Gonzaga team and the Hawkeyes need to reestablish themselves. Purdue has hit 80 or more points in two of their last three appearances, and I think they’ve got the offensive talent to keep pace with Iowa here. Should be a great game.
